The play takes place in Betty Meeks' Fishing Lodge Resort,
Tilghman County, Georgia, U.S.A.
During the spring not too long ago
The building was once a log farmhouse, now adapted for service for paying guests - middle-income summer people, mostly, who come to fish, and swim, and play a little cards at night, and also fill up on Betty's away-from-home cooking.
Tilghman County, about two hours by good road south of Atlanta, then pull off at Cooley's Food and Bait and call for directions. It used to be that Omar Meeks, who owned the lake house, would then have driven down and led you up the hill in his Dodge pickup. But Omar is gone now, and Betty, his widow, doesn't drive.
The residents are equally divided between the very poor- old folks who live in hillside dwellings which we might call makeshift but some of them have been in use for over a hundred years - the very rich, who have bought most of the lakeside property, erected split-level homes, and put down sod lawns, some of which the owners even mow themselves, enjoying the rough life.
Debutantes from the city, recently and happily past virginity, are here too, with nervous beaux, brought in on the sly while Daddy and Mommy are off at the convention.
A world where the real locals appear backward and awkward. A world where English has been changed to a different languague. A simple world consisting of old trucks, oil stained baseball caps, Christian morals with a different way of practicing them. A world of worry about losing your little piece of property, or being gossiped about, or unjustly suffering the wrath of the ever present Ku Klux Klan. Yet all in all happy souls who are friendly but possess a little suspicious side concerning strangers.
That's our Foreigner: A shy nervous stranger, badly in need of a little relaxing vacation, who finding it most difficult to talk to anybody pretends not to understand English in order that nobody will talk to him.
The basis of this laughter-filled comedy concerns his dealings with these people or better yet in their dealing with him. The plot twists and turns as he overhears their unknowing conversations. Yup, he's just asking for trouble and it's not long before he's in it. The ending is novel and the special effects SPAO has planned will really add to the enjoyment.
Come on down and meet Froggy and Ellard and Owen and the rest of the zanies. If you get lost - give us a call and we'll send someone out for yer. We're basically friendly folk AND you are never a stranger in the comic world of SPAO.
